Hi, I'm Nicola

Nicola Crook
Ella Crook

I have struggled on and off over the years with bouts of depression and although I am beautifully supported by my family and friends the only self help things that have brought me any sense of peace is painting, walking the dog and visiting woodlands.  So it makes perfect sense to combine the three things that bring me peace, hope and harmony into my working life.

This decision didn't happen all at once.  I started with painting.  I tried everything from figurative to abstract but nothing really felt like it was mine.  I was inspired by others but was struggling to find my own voice.  Then two things happened at once.  I moved into my wonderful studio at Long Eaton Art Room and we got our puppy Ella.  She's a lively, cheeky little cocker spaniel and she makes me laugh as well as being a great companion when on walks.  I couldn't hide anymore.

It was then that I discovered woodlands.  They are a brilliant place to walk and train Ella but also I found it gave me a sense of peace.  They became my sanctuary and I began to paint them more and more.  What I discovered in my local woodlands are reclaimed landscapes full of Silver Birch trees.  This made me curious, where were all the oaks, beeches and other broad leaved trees?  When I did find them they were young.  What did that mean?  It was then I discovered the history of the Silver Birch.  How they were the first trees to colonise Britain after the ice age.  How today they very often self seed and are sometimes planted in reclaimed and rewilded landscapes. And they are enabling wildlife to return creating the much needed cycle of life.

They are fascinating and beautiful. I had found my muse and I am much happier and healthier than I have been for years.

I hope this explains a little of why I do what I do.  Please do take a good look around the website.  If you have any questions please feel free to email me and I will do my best to help.

Take care

Nicola xx
